Biography

“Never stop playing, keep on dancing.”

Herman Kuis grew up in a musical family in Groningen. He discovers his passion for sound, electronics and the magic of music. Although his background as a design engineer in the field of biomedical science, his musical side increasingly emerge. Finally he is responding to the call. His musical career starts as a drummer and later as cajonist, Herman successfully developed himself through the years from drummer to producer of dance music. Next to producing music, he started a research project MUTE, a tool that measures impact of music. With this tool we can explore new applications of music in the domain of health care.

“Medical and technical science has taught me that having fun, being creative and being playful is the core of a vital and happy life.”, Herman Kuis.

His first EP was released in 2019; ”Plug In Your Head”, with four dance tracks on it. With this EP he finds his way to international vocalists and other producers worldwide.
Since 2021 Spotify now includes self-released tracks in collaboration with other international musicians. Herman’s sound can be described as retro, energetic and unconventional. With special attention to the healing effect of music and sound. Next to producing music, he focuses also on research about the effects of music on listeners.

“Never stop playing, keep on dancing. Be the playing wise man in a dancing sun.”, Herman Kuis.

Shortly after the release of his first EP; Plug In Your Head, his work was played on the radio. Two singles from the EP were regularly played on radio programs; Echt Erik (from 30:46) and Poppodium Odrie.

Herman’s music style can be described as; penetrating melody lines, catchy beats and retro synthesizer sound, experience the past through the music  of today.
In his own way, from the turntable and in his productions, he brings the past back into the present. Combining a dose of today’s energy with the nostalgic sounds of the past, this is the strength of Herman Kuis as a DJ and producer. He plays with energy and sound, so that you keep moving and get better.

Research

“MUTE, a Music Utility That Engage”.

MUTE is a research project to develop a tool that measures the impact of music. The main questions to answer are; how does music influence our mood? What is it’s relation to our well-being? What can we learn from this insight?
Since 2019 this project was initiated by Herman Kuis, to explore new application of music in health care with help of creative technology.
With his background in biomedical engineering, product design and his passion for music, he started this product research to develop a tool helping medical specialists and therapists getting more knowledge of the musical impact on patients. Based on literature study and personal interviews with music producers, medical specialists and art managers in the music industry, he launched the project MUTE.

In 2022 MUTE tested the concept idea for this tool in a living lab, that was organised during Eurosonic Noorderslag by Innofest.
With his knowledge in the bio-technical field and his passion for music, he gathered interesting and surprising results that shows potential for his tool. The test site was organised very well by INNOFEST, they helped me a lot to come forward during the preparation and testing. Thank you so much for the support!

Also I like to thank in special Reinier de la Parra for his expertise in IT and his help to prioritize sub projects.

“Music is like a picture of emotions reflected by sound and rhythm. If you resonate with it you find memories and movement”, Herman Kuis

The follow up of the project, since November 2022, is: starting with the development of a proof of principle to test the tool idea in depth, based on the experiment outcomes done at ESNS 2022. Basically what is needed know is a software program that gather data done by an mobile application. Witch can also come with music suggestion based on the need and knowledge that is required by the listener and researcher. Communication between different digital platform is needed in this case to get things done.
In January 2023 MUTE will be attending the MXT conference.

Keywords: #IOT, #machine learning, #mood playlist, #musician as therapist, #art as health, #project MIMIC UMCG, #music streaming, #music discovery, #music in health, #music as medicine, #feeling good, #well-being with music, #concert hall as hospital, #hospital as stage.

The approach of this product development can be found in iterative designing, base on user experiences and technical opportunities. That means cycles of prototyping, testing and tweaking. Or in other musical words done by Fatboy Slim:”eat, sleep, rave, repeat!”
The core of this research in tool development can be found in system thinking or design thinking. That means avoiding jumping in conclusion by answering five questions: who?, what?, where?, when? and why?

In the links below you can find articles that highlights this project and perspective on future plans with project MUTE, all in Dutch:

“The idea to develop such a tool, is to tell the story and significance about using music in therapy and our daily live”, Herman Kuis

This movie below, it is in Dutch, you can have a brief overview about the first results. This concept tool MUTE was tested at Eurosonic Noorderslag (ESNS) with visitors and musicians. I am very thankful for the first results, that came through the teamwork with all volunteers on ESNS.
